A Simple DIY SIMATIC S5 USB Adapter
The SIMATIC S5 PLCs, though long discontinued, are still commonly found in many industrial settings. However, connecting these legacy systems to modern computers poses a challenge due to their reliance on the outdated COM port. Most contemporary laptops no longer feature these ports, and USB-COM adapters often fail to work reliably, especially on 64-bit Windows systems.
This project presents a simple DIY solution: a custom-built SIMATIC S5 USB adapter. By reverse-engineering the original COM adapter, this USB version was developed to seamlessly connect the S5 PLC to modern computers. The adapter works flawlessly with Windows x64, ensuring continued use of the S5 PLC in today's technology landscape.
For designing the adapter, the EasyEDA online editor was utilized. EasyEDA's user-friendly interface and extensive component library made the design process straightforward, enabling quick prototyping and refinement of the circuit. This DIY adapter offers a practical and cost-effective solution for maintaining and programming SIMATIC S5 PLCs using modern computing equipment.
