Description
Magnetic Pulser
- 100 µH, ~0.2 Ω Coil (using 10 pcb coils)
- 555 Timer to control pulse train
- 48V Capacitor Bank / 10 mF
- ~200A Pulse Current
- ~2000 Gauss Magnetic Field
- USB Input: 20V, 45-100W
- LED Indicator for Capacitor Voltage
- Single Pulse or Adjustable Pulse Train
- Analog Charge Indicator (0-48V)
This unit functions but is not fully complete and has some issues. While charging the capacitors, the unit shuts down because it draws too much current. This was supposed to be limited by the boost converter, but it is not working as expected. The inductor and PMOS transistor need a higher current rating, or else it will burn out when running full power. A current control mechanism must be added to ensure the capacitors charge in a controlled manner. A high-rated resistor could be used, but it would consume a significant amount of power and greatly reduce the pulse rate.
The transient response of the current and magnetic field was calculated and simulated in Python. It can be found here.
