Description

1. Design Requirements

The project aims to create a versatile and compact solution for lighting and theatre enthusiasts, integrating seamless control and connectivity features. The device facilitates the connection of WS2812b LED lights through RJ45 ports, providing flexibility in lighting setups and ease of stage adjustments. It utilizes a powerful Wemos D1 Mini board with ArtNet to DMX conversion capabilities, catering to diverse lighting needs in theatre applications.

2. Overall Design Program

The design incorporates the following key components and functionalities:

  • RJ45 Connectivity: Four RJ45 ports are used for connecting WS2812b LED lights. This configuration allows for long-distance runs and easy reconfiguration during live performances.
  • Wemos D1 Mini Integration: The device is powered by a Wemos D1 Mini board, featuring robust wireless capabilities. The MAX485 chip is employed for DMX OUT functionality, ensuring reliable communication.
  • Power and Programming: The device supports dual power options via USB-C or USB-B, with programming facilitated through the Micro-B port. This flexibility enhances usability in various environments.

3. Circuit Composition

3.1 Power Supply Circuit

The circuit is designed to accommodate both USB-C and USB-B power sources. The power management ensures stable operation, with the device capable of handling the demands of the connected LED lights and wireless board. A compact form factor has been prioritized to enhance versatility while maintaining functionality.

3.2 Communication Circuit

The Wemos D1 Mini board connects to DMX OUT using a MAX485 chip, enabling effective ArtNet to DMX conversion. The device is designed to interface seamlessly with lighting control software via the ArtNet protocol. The RJ45 ports are wired to pins D5, D6, D7, and D8 on the Wemos D1 Mini for straightforward configuration.

3.3 Connectivity and Control

The device allows for easy setup and operation, leveraging existing ArtNet to DMX conversion software such as esp-dmx (GitHub). This approach simplifies integration and control of lighting systems, providing a user-friendly experience.

4. PCB Design

4.1 Outline Design

The PCB design is optimized for a compact form factor, taking into account the placement of RJ45 ports, power connectors, and the Wemos D1 Mini board. The design ensures that all components are accessible and that the device remains modular and adaptable.

4.2 Component Layout

Components are arranged to minimize interference and maximize efficiency. The layout is designed to facilitate easy modification and customization, allowing users to adapt the design for specific needs or preferences.

4.3 PCB Wiring

The PCB features both top and bottom layer routing to accommodate all necessary connections. Key considerations include:

  • Power lines set to 40mil width for reliability.
  • Signal lines set to 10mil width for precision.
  • Prioritization of straight-line routing and minimal bends to optimize signal integrity.

5. Testing and Validation

Testing will focus on ensuring reliable operation with WS2812b lights and DMX control systems. The goal is to achieve functionality comparable to the Super Valid Design's modular lighting rig, with a focus on modularity and ease of use. Ongoing refinements will be made based on user feedback and evolving requirements.

6. Future Development

Future plans include the development of a lighting board featuring 10 faders and a master control, inspired by designs like the Jands StageCL. The project aims to build a community around open-source lighting solutions and foster innovation in small theatre applications.

7. Boards

Board 1 is the main board, which houses the ArtNet to DMX adapter, and the 4 outputs.

Board 2 is the "wings" which have the RJ45, and the WS2812b output.
