Description

WS2813 connector with power MOSFET and level shifter hack

  • No level shifter IC needed to run Neopixels/WS2812/WS2813 from 3.3V microcontroller
  • MOSFET to turn LED strip power on/off from a microcontroller GPIO pin

A SMD version of the WS2813 gets sacrificed to run at ~4.3V (powered through the diode), which makes it accept 3.3V data signals. The data signal it outputs can then be used to control WS2812/WS2813 LEDs running at 5V.

Pins:

  • DIN: Connect directly to microcontroller GPIO (data pin)
  • FET: Connect directly to microcontroller GPIO (turn MOSFET on/off)
  • DO: Connect to WS2812/WS2813 DIN pin
  • LGND: Connect to LED strip GND
  • 5V: Connect to LED strip 5V
