Description
This project is a high-current 5V linear voltage regulator circuit designed to convert 12V DC to 5V at up to 2A using a 7805 regulator IC with a TIP42 PNP power transistor to handle the higher current load. The 7805 maintains voltage regulation while the TIP42 bypasses the majority of the current, allowing the system to deliver more than the 1A limit of the 7805 alone.
The circuit is suitable for powering 5V logic circuits, sensors, microcontrollers, or other devices that require stable 5V with higher current demands.
Note: TIP42 (or MJ2955 for higher current) must be heatsinked properly. Add proper short-circuit protection if using in critical applications.
