Description

This project details the design and implementation of a smart lithium-ion battery charging circuit specifically tailored for a small, single-cell light boat battery. The primary purpose of this circuit is to enable both efficient charging of the battery and uninterrupted operation of the light boat when an external power source (via micro USB) is available. A key feature of this design is its ability to bypass the charging circuitry when external power is present, directly powering the load and ensuring that the charging process is not impeded by device usage. This functionality mirrors the user experience of charging a smartphone while simultaneously using it. The circuit incorporates a boost converter to provide a stable output voltage for the light boat and a dedicated lithium-ion charging controller for safe and effective battery charging. A P-channel MOSFET acts as a smart switch to manage power flow based on the presence of an external power source, while a Schottky diode prevents reverse current flow.
