Description

Bike Sensor is a research-oriented mobile sensing platform designed to collect environmental data while riding a bicycle. The system combines GPS tracking with LoRa and Wi-Fi connectivity to support distributed, long-range, and opportunistic data upload from the field.

The platform is intended to capture a broad set of urban and roadside indicators such as vibration, sound level, air pressure, particulate matter, gas concentration, and related environmental signals. In addition, it integrates openBikeSensor-style functionality to measure overtaking distances and close-passing events by motor vehicles, making it possible to document traffic safety and cyclist exposure in real-world conditions.

By continuously mapping these measurements along bicycle routes, the project aims to build a high-resolution environmental dataset that can later be analyzed for patterns relevant to biodiversity, habitat quality, traffic stress, and human impact. Originating as a research idea from Gelsenkirchen, the project can serve as a scalable data-collection tool for citizen science, ecological monitoring, urban sustainability studies, and bicycle infrastructure assessment...
